Cord Blood transplantation has already created buzz in the medical sector, but not all have expressed support, calling it unethical. While it provides a breakthrough alternative to the finding and extraction of suitably matched stem cells to help cure patients ailing from serious illnesses, some medical practitioners still argue that a lot still needs to be unveiled about this novel procedure.
Best for Children
Over the years, cord blood transplants have proven themselves helpful for paediatric patients. However, its use in adults has remained a riddle.
Cold blood does contain haematopoietic stem cells that aid complicated treatments, but its concentration has been found to be limited to accommodate the needs of a full-grown adult. In addition, stem cells can only be extracted from cord blood on one occasion, so there is a chance that the stem cell needs of an adult may require a number of cord blood units to be fully functional.
The Search Continues
There are many schools of thought surrounding this procedure. Nevertheless, the fact still remains that it can help save the lives of children. For most families, this is enough to attempt to weather the costs involved, particularly if the family has a history of certain terminal diseases.
Who knows, maybe in the course of time and after years of never-ending study into the cord blood transplantation, improvements will be introduced and it becomes more widely available and more globally accepted. For as we all know, Science never stops at 'maybe'.
